BEAUTFUL, UNIQUE BINDINGS

Explore different ways to bind quilted pieces –by making a placemat. The 2 techniques we will cover are 1) a traditional double bias or straight of grain binding with hand sewn finishing. 2) a faux-flange straight of grain machine sewn on binding. Each of these bindings and simple variations to these binding techniques can add color and personality to your pieces – quilts, table runners, placemats or garments. Included will be information on the advantages of each type of binding.
By binding your placemat, you will learn how to cut, join strips and prepare the bindings, and sew it on accurately, making French fold corners to make a mitered corner; how to machine stitch or hand stitch the second side of the binding on, and how to join the 2 ends of the binding without adding bulk so that your bindings are straight and even.
The instructor is Janet Cass, a former hand weaver and graphic designer turned quilter in the past 6 years. She is an award winning quilter, has shown her quilts at the Cocheco Quilt Show and MQX. Recently she has turned her sewing and quilting focus to quilted vests, jackets and wall hangings.
